Brick and Mortar

This is a project I’ve wanted to do for quite some time.  The overall theme is turn of the century factory.  Again what I love about this set is that the materials are very easy to come by and relatively inexpensive.  There is some labor and layers required for this one so it’s a little more time consuming than other projects.

The basics are as follows

Backdrop- The backdrop is 8x20’ painter’s canvas torn in to 3" strips and stapled to a 2x4 front and back.  Then we hung them 4 across with negative space between

Brick- Purchased faux brick 4x8’ sheets from Lowe’s (not sold at Home Depot) and attached to a 2x4 frame and ¼" ply wood backing.  Painted with 2 different colors of “Restore” deck sealer which gave us a great texture and the color we wanted.  Using “Stone” spray paint from Rust-Oleum we closely sprayed all the grout lines following directly after with a  brush to smooth and smudge the grout.

Finally cut down 1" and 2" foam insulation in to brick sized chunks. Painting them with a variety of spray paints and more “restore”  The spray paint eats the foam and gives them a very weathered look.  Finally we Hot glued them on randomly to give the wall depth.

Using 1x2s and trim pieces with Plex-glass we made fake windows add dirtied them up with spray paint and the nail gun.

To age our corrugated metal we bought new 2x10’ sheets at Home Depot coated them in muriatic acid, let it dry and then sprayed on Hydrogen Peroxide.  it instantly ages and rusts the metal.  Please wear respirators when using the acid and during the reaction.  Also if you get any spray flush with fresh water immediately.   Lost a pair of shoes to this project!

Finally we trimmed everything out in pallet wood and Railroad ties that we had quartered to reduce weight and size while still giving us that great texture.
